Avengers: Infinity War – How Sebastian Stan Found Out About His Character’s Death

Avengers: Infinity War, in addition to being a pretty solid movie also featured one incredibly pivotal moment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Pretty much the snap heard ’round the universe, where, after gathering all of the Infinity Stones, Thanos snapped his fingers and almost immediately disintegrated half of the population of the universe. Much to the shock of many theatergoers, this included more than half of the Avengers team.

The first one to literally bite the dust was none other than the Winter Soldier, played by Sebastian Stan. But with this kind of movie, you can’t help but wonder whether or not the actors knew about this. Quite famously, Marvel Studios was very secretive about this film, with fake scripts being passed around and actors usually not really knowing what was going on even while filming scenes. So, with this in mind, how did Stan himself find out about his death? Here’s what the actor said to Jimmy Kimmel last night:

“I really didn’t. It was actually my stuntman James Young that told me on set that day that, ‘All right, mate, we’re going to have this mat, and then you’re going to fall.’ And I was like, ‘Fall where?’ And he was like, ‘You know, just falling, because the thing…but it’s the air,’ but he never completed his sentences, so he was like, ‘It’s the thing from up there, but you know,’ (slams fist into palm). And I was like, ‘Hold on. And he said, ‘Anthony [Russo] will know.

“So I went up to Anthony and said, ‘Anthony, what’s happening?’ And he’s like ‘Talk to Joe [Russo].’ So I went up to Joe and said, ‘Hey Joe, what’s going on,’ and he said, ‘Did you talk to Anthony?’ And he said, ‘Yeah, you’re just gonna…you know…’ (gestures wildly with his hands). And I was like, ‘Am I dying?'”

Gotta love the effective communication on set!

In all seriousness, though, it is interesting that the filmmakers didn’t even communicate with each other about how they would reveal things to their actors. Maybe they just assumed the actors would follow orders and not ask any questions? Regardless of all that, it’s clear that it ultimately didn’t matter. The moment was still incredibly effective, and all of us are still wondering how the studio will follow it up in Avengers 4.
