Avengers: Infinity War – Sorry, Folks, Loki Is Really Dead

You’ve gotta love comic book deaths. No matter how real or definitive they may actually seem, we have been conditioned to believe that the end is never truly here. Loki is a testament to that. He’s “died” a couple times over the course of his tenure in the MCU — once at the end of Thor and once at the end of Thor: The Dark World — but he’s always returned.

However, in the opening scene of Avengers: Infinity War, he seemed to meet his actual death at the hands of Thanos. The scene itself is pretty horrific, with Loki’s life literally being choked out of him before we linger on his dead face for what feels like 30 seconds. So that seems to confirm he’s all but dead, right? Not so fast! Fans are nothing, if not dreamers, and given the number of times the character has come back in the past, his return hasn’t been ruled out.

Except it has…by directors Anthony and Joe Russo. At a recent Q&A following a screening of Avengers: Infinity War, one theory that was posited was that Hulk was actually Loki in disguise. They rebutted that claimed with “Loki is Dead.”

But is this actually so? I know the Russos have been pretty adamant about everyone being gone at the end of the film, but we know for a fact that plenty of them will be returning in their own films down the line. Without a doubt, they’re doing their best to retain the integrity of the story and not spoil things, so I’d take this talk with a huge grain of salt.

So could Loki come back? Sure, you never know in this world. But given how terrible of a track record the MCU has sticking to their deaths, I’d like to think they’d retain at least one crucial death, even if we know that character is coming back for his own limited series.

But what do you think? Is Loki actually dead? Let us know your thoughts down below!
