Benicio del Toro may have just hit the big screen in a huge way with Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but he’s also back in a much smaller film in the form of Sicario 2: Soldado. As the title indicates, this is the sequel to the 2015 critical darling, Sicario.

Unfortunately, Emily Blunt will not be returning for this hard-edged sequel, but one could argue that her character arc was essentially finished, while del Toro’s character still had more room to grow. As screenwriter Taylor Sheridan put it, with del Toro’s character, “there was so much left unsaid.”

While the last film saw Blunt’s character overseeing things, this next film sees del Toro and Josh Brolin’s characters operating with absolutely no restrictions and no oversight.

This first trailer (which you can see above) definitely drives that point home, with del Toro’s character going on the rampage with his handgun.

Here is what EW has to say about the plot:

“In Soldado, the drug war has escalated as the cartels have shifted to trafficking terrorists across the U.S.-Mexico border, and that’s when Matt’s bosses — including one played by Catherine Keener — ask him to intervene.”
