Bill Murray and Rashida Jones Join Sophia Coppola’s On The Rocks

On The Rocks, directed by Sophia Coppola has announced Parks and Recreation’s Rashida Jones, and The Grand Budapest Hotel‘s Bill Murray have joined the films cast. On The Rocks marks the first time that Bill Murray will work with Sophia Coppola since he starred in her 2003 film, Lost in Translation for which Murray was nominated by the Academy Awards for Best Actor. Murray lost out to Sean Penn’s tour de force performance in the Clint Eastwood directed film Mystic River.

Sophia Coppola may be handling writing and directing duties for the film, though it is not yet confirmed. On The Rocks will be the first film produced within the partnership between A24 and Apple. A24 is an independent entertainment company founded by David Fenkel, Daniel Katz, and John Hodges. A24 is based in New York City. Its specialties include film distribution, and film and television production. A24’s previous credits include the 2018 film Hereditary, and the 2016 Oscar winner Moonlight.

Back in November of 2018, A24 and Apple began a multi-year agreement. The plan is for the studio to produce films for Apple, a company with a large technological imprint. Apple plans to increase its footprint in entertainment and media, and undoubtedly plans to take a bite out of the projected 2.14 trillion dollars the worldwide entertainment industry is expected to be valued at by 2020.

On the Rocks follows a young mother (Jones) who reconnects with her larger-than-life playboy father (Murray) on an adventure through New York City. Filming is slated to begin in spring of 2019. Are you looking forward to this reunion of Murray and Coppola? sound off down below!
