Birds Of Prey Star Says Film Is, Funny, Weird, And ’90s In The Best Way’

God bless us all, the ’90s are coming back. While shows like Stranger Things are romanticizing the 1980s, the next big decade is hot on its tail. We already have some projects like Fresh Off the Boat and Dark Phoenix that are banking on the nostalgia of the said decade, and the annoying fashion trends are already rearing their ugly heads. But there’s more coming, and apparently, we’ll be seeing it in Birds of Prey.

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is set to hit theaters in February of next year, and it will see the return of Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and the introduction of Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress. Speaking with the New York Times, Winstead discussed her role in the film, and a bit about its “feel.”

Birds of Prey was the next level up. In Gemini Man I’m a D.I.A. [Defense Intelligence Agency] agent who’s been hired to keep an eye on Will Smith, but in Birds of Prey I play this assassin who’s been trained since childhood. It’s all women and genuinely funny and weird. It feels from the ’90s, in the best way.”

I’m happy to hear that this film we be a funny one. Of course, Harley Quinn as a character has always had real potential for funny, and with her tongue-in-cheek style, she’s been ripe for a “weird” take. I’m not entirely sure what Winstead means by ’90s, but something tells me it may have to do with that Derelicte-esque costume stuff we saw in the teaser.

Perhaps with it, they will bring back full grunge.

Regardless, I’m excited to see what they cook up. What about you? Are you excited to see what Mary Elizabeth Winstead had to say about Birds of Prey? Let us know down below!
