Birds Of Prey’s Mary Elizabeth Winstead On How The Film Can Help The Genre Grow

The superhero film genre may be relatively new when compared to others in Hollywood, but it’s by no means young. For decades, audiences have been able to put themselves in the shows of men and women greater than themselves, but even in the Golden Era of superhero films in which we live, there is always room for growth and improvement.

So when we see movies like Birds of Prey gaining some momentum, while it’s easy to be cynical about it (Warner Bros. does love that money, after all, and they’re totally down to bank on the success of Wonder Woman), it’s also a real opportunity to see the genre expand.

Earlier this week, Mary Elizabeth Winstead was confirmed to be taking on the role of Huntress in the film, and speaking with The Observer, she discussed what made her excited about it:

“I’m really excited about the fact that it’s so female-led both in front of the camera and behind the camera. I think the perspective is really interesting and different for a superhero film in that sense…And the idea of suiting up into a superhero suit and it being from the female gaze is really interesting.”

And speaking of seeing things from a more female perspective, she went on to discuss how having that extra perspective can only help the genre:

“I think it opens it up to a new perspective and artistic energy that I think is needed in that world. That’s not to say that the films that have already come along aren’t good or valid or worthy in their own way. But I think more perspectives in every aspect are needed.”

Sounds legit…but what about those rumors surrounding Batman? Rumors have it that he’s been gone from Gotham for two years during the events of Birds of Prey. Sadly, Winstead was a bit too savvy to answer:

“I will not go there, but I appreciate the attempt.”

Are you also excited to see the genre grow with films like Birds of Prey? Sure, we already got Wonder Woman as a female-led, female-directed superhero film, but it must be realized that there is never just one perspective from a specific sex.
