Black Panther 2 To Shoot In 2021? Martin Freeman Thinks So

If there’s one MCU movie we all knew would be getting a sequel no matter what happened in Avengers: Endgame it was Black Panther. The movie remains Marvel’s highest-grossing origin movie and also got the studio nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars.

It was actually a little bit of a surprise when Black Panther 2 wasn’t announced as part of the Phase 4 slate by Marvel at this year’s SDCC. However, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige did confirm Black Panther 2 was coming, along with Guardians 3 and Blade. If we had to take a guess, which I will, we would think that 2023 seems like the year when we will see Black Panther 2 released. It seems highly improbable that Feige would name drop Guardians 3, Blade and Black Panther 2, if they were not going to be the next three movies out of the gate after Phase 4.

Well, today we have some extra evidence to point towards that 2023 release date. Martin Freeman who played Everett Ross in both Civil War and Black Panther recently spoke with Uproxx and he indicated that it could be 2021 when Black Panther 2 begins production. Check out the quote.

“The last I heard, we won’t be doing it next year, it might be 2021 when we’re making the next Black Panther. That’s all I know.”

This actually completely makes sense for a 2023 release. Black Widow and Eternals are filming or getting ready to start respectively, and those are next year’s offerings. We then expect 2021’s slate to begin filming next year and so on and so forth. We already know Black Panther 2 won’t release in 2022, because we have the slate for that year. Add it all up, with what everyone expected anyway and I think it’s pretty certain that (barring delays) we will get Black Panther 2 in 2023.

Freeman was also asked whether he knows if Everett Ross was dusted in ‘the snappening’ (still better than The Blip) or whether he survived.

“I think so, yeah. No, no one’s told me that he died.”

Of course, without a script in place yet, would Freeman really need to be told whether he died or remained alive? It is going to be interesting to see what happened in Wakanda during the five-year absence of its King, only for him to suddenly return from the dead. Who took over, and would they be quite happy to simply give it up for T’Challa’s return?
