Black Panther Aiming For Best Picture At The Oscars

Oscars, you’d better watch out, because Black Panther is coming for the Best Picture trophy at next year’s awards ceremony. And no, we’re not talking about the recently-revealed “Popular Film” category that the Oscars are tossing around, but legit Best Picture.

However, with the news that this category would be rearing its ugly head, you’d think that Disney would be reshuffling their plans to shoot for that category — no such luck, one studio spokesperson told the Los Angeles Times. Interestingly enough, given the climate surrounding the Oscars, where apathy is on the rise and overall interest is waning, one Oscar consultant thinks those up top at the Academy would love to see Black Panther succeed.

“Right now, I think [academy Chief Executive] Dawn Hudson would crawl in a hole if ‘Black Panther’ gets snubbed for best picture and winds up landing in the popular film category. The funny thing is that Dawn would be way more disappointed than anyone at Marvel.”

But they do hope to be on that list of 10, and as Feige stated in an interview with the outlet, he wants to see their talent and craft rewarded.

“I would like to see the hard work and the effort and the vision and the belief of the talented filmmaker Ryan Coogler, who sat across the table from us a few years ago and said, ‘I have been wrestling with questions about my past and my heritage and I think I really want to tell a story within this movie.’ And that he did it so unbelievably well and with so much impact … seeing that potentially being recognized is what excites me the most.”

The outlet goes on to speculate that tapping into that aspect for the campaign could lead them to Best Picture. Rather than present it like a normal blockbuster, show it off an auteur-driven film that was made to help a director cope with his feelings surrounding his heritage. That’ll get ’em!

Will Black Panther end up getting Best Picture or even get nominated? We’ll see…
