Black Panther Director Ryan Coogler Reveals Killmonger’s Backstory

With all the current hype surrounding the record-breaking release of Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel is nowhere near taking their foot off the pedal. Today is the Digital HD release of Black Panther, with the Blu-Ray/DVD release hitting stores next Tuesday, May 15th. As of this past weekend, the film has grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide since it’s February 16th release, with nearly $700 million from the domestic box office alone. With today’s release, Collider released a clip from the film’s audio commentary where writer/director Ryan Coogler explains a certain aspect of Killmonger’s backstory.

The scene discussed involves T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) discovering the truth about his father’s past and how it relates to Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan). Coogler delves into how the scene stands out as well as the backstory involving Killmonger’s mother:

“The backstory idea of it was this was through the idea of the woman he fell in love with, the African-American woman. The idea was that when you see those guys talking over that paperwork in the beginning of the film, they’re trying to figure out a way to break her out. She’s been incarcerated. They’re trying to break her out of jail. The idea is that they never got her out and she passed away in prison, so Killmonger didn’t come up with a mom either.”
