Black Panther Pulls In Massive Thursday Numbers

According to Deadline, Black Panther has pulled in some great numbers for its Thursday night preview. The number they are set to clear is $25 million. For reference, this means it will either match or beat Captain America: Civil War‘s Thursday numbers, and it could fall in behind Avengers: Age of Ultron‘s $27.6 million. Also worth noting is that the latter film has the highest preview night of any Marvel film to date.

One thing for sure is that it will beat out The Hunger Games‘ $19.7 million preview, which is currently the biggest pre-summer preview night.

Now let’s take a look at all these films and their opening numbers.

Captain America: Civil War opened with $179.1 million, and Avengers: Age of Ultron opened with $191.3 million. With those comparisons in mind, Black Panther seems like it could be aiming for $180-$190 million opening weekend. One extra benefit it has over Age of Ultron, however, is rave reviews. People LOVED this film (including me), and as a result, word of mouth may push the already-surprising film into even higher opening grosses.

If nothing else, it seems set to break Deadpool‘s amazing $132.4 million opening weekend record. Given this is a first standalone film in a new franchise, Marvel Studios couldn’t be happier with the performance of this one. Like Wonder Woman last year, Black Panther is sure to become a huge movement in pop culture.
