Black Widow Could Be The Start Of A ‘Standalone Franchise’

While it’s become easier and easier to accept the Marvel Cinematic Universe as one franchise, at the end of the day, it is a superfranchise — one that is made up of several smaller ones. It started off that way, and while the borders have become fuzzier as the stories have become more intertwined, there’s still plenty to love about each franchise independently from one another.

As such, it’s no surprise that the upcoming Black Widow film can be the start of its own series. While Natasha may have met her end in Avengers: Endgame, from what we know, this flick will act as sort of a passing of the torch, so it makes sense as such, but at a recent Women in Hollywood event, star and producer Scarlett Johansson confirmed as such, as pointed out by NY Times’ Kyle Buchanan.

“ScarJo notes that the upcoming BLACK WIDOW is the first Marvel movie produced by one of its actors. She also referred to it as a “standalone franchise” which is interesting if you expected it to be a one-off based on… you know”

So, what does this mean? Basically, it means there will likely be more Black Widow films in the future. Given Natasha’s fate, they may not star her as the titular agent, but as I mentioned above, the name itself may very well be passed on.

But Marvel Studios has managed to surprise us in the past, so who really knows what the future holds for this character. Using some crazy time-bending stuff, we could very well see Johansson continue to portray this character for the foreseeable future.
