Well, this news is a bit unexpected. I could have gone through a long list of actors I thought could be a good fit to act alongside Scarlett Johansson in a Black Widow film, and chances are I never really would have come up with Emma Watson. No disrespect to her, but I guess I never really imagined her as someone who’d hop into a Marvel movie…even though she started her career in fantasy films like Harry Potter and later on Beauty and the Beast.

While it sounds like no signatures have been signed yet, the folks over at That Hashtag Show are reporting that she is on a list of frontrunners to star alongside Johansson as a “kick ass female Bond” type character. With her having just wrapped production on Little Women, talk of her joining is reportedly “gaining momentum” at the studio between director Cate Shortland and producers Brad Winderbaum and Kevin Feige.

The role is said to be physically demanding, and that would certainly a relatively unique role for the actress. That being said, nothing is set in stone, as this list doesn’t necessarily include everyone involved in talks at any level. There are plenty of others who have auditioned and made an impression with the studio, including Alice Englert and Dar Zuzovsky.

They are reportedly looking for someone ages 30-39, but there does seem a willingness to bend those requirements based on who they feel is a good fit. Will Watson end up in the film? Only time will tell. More importantly, I’m curious to see Emma Watson engaging in physical combat on the same level as Black Widow. That’ll be cool to see if she does take said role.
