Mark your calendars, BLADE RUNNER fans, as Alcon Entertainment has announced the release date for the long-anticipated sequel to the Ridley Scott classic. According to Deadline, the film is currently slated to hit theaters on January 12, 2018, which is Martin Luther King weekend. The only other film in that day thus far is GNOMEO AND JULIET: SHERLOCK GNOMES, and as Deadline is so apt at pointing out, that’s hardly a competition for BLADE RUNNER 2, as the films have virtually no crossover in their target audience.

BLADE RUNNER 2 will see the return of Harrison Ford, reprising his role as Rick Deckard. It will also star Ryan Gosling, and as of this writing, it’s unclear as to what the plot will be. All we do know is that it will take place 30-40 years after the events in the first film, though that does bring into question as to whether or not this means that Ford was a replicant or not. It was one of those questions that was better left to the imagination, but now that we have a sequel, I suppose it’ll have to be answered.

Writing the script we have Hampton Fancher and Michael Green. Fancher is notable in that he was one of the co-writers of the original film, so hopefully he’ll help to bring the same weight and integrity of the first film.

Perhaps most notable, however, is the film’s director, Denis Villenueve, who has been killing it lately with such films as PRISONERS, ENEMY, and SICARIO. It’s a bit of a shame that Ridley Scott is too busy with the ALIEN franchise to take on this one, but Villenueve is an excellent choice, nonetheless.
