Blumhouse Crosses Amazing Box Office Milestone

Blumhouse has proven to be quite the scrappy little studio. It’s incredibly small compared to the big ones we tend to cover here on this site, but it’s managed to make an incredible splash based on a very specific strategy: low budget, high concept. This led to such big successes as Get Out, Split, and most recently, Halloween, which has grossed over $230 million worldwide off its $10 million budget.

Based on its low budget, high return strategy, you can bet your bottom dollar that they’re doing pretty darn well for itself, but even as far as total revenue goes, they’re no slouches. According to a new report from Variety, Blumhouse has just hit $4 billion at the worldwide box office. Of course, their bread and butter is horror, and speaking with the outlet, founder Jason Blum spoke about the appeal of horror in today’s world.

“The world feels very unstable to people, and I think the idea of a controlled scary situation is somehow comforting when everything else is out of your control. It’s a respite from the horror in the real world. That has something to do with it. Also, the theatrical experience is really changing. Drama has migrated to television, but the horror genre really works in theaters. Even though it’s not a live event, it falls into that category of a collective experience.”

Like many productions houses out there, Blumhouse likes to think they don’t just make fun horror movies, but that they make great movies in general, and that can also be a part of their appeal. Personally, I think it all has to do with their concepts. Look at films like Get Out, Happy Death Day, and Split, and you’re dealing with easy to pitch, easy to sell movies. Add in the fact that they’re all either decent or great, and you have a one-two punch in their favor.

Sure, that’s much easier said than done, but it looks like Blumhouse has done wonders with that overall approach.
