Bohemian Rhapsody Set To Make $35 To $40 Million In Opening Weekend

Don’t stop it now, ’cause it’s having such a good time at the box office. This past Thursday, the biopic Bohemian Rhapsody took in a solid $3.9 million at the box office, which seems to bid well for its opening weekend. In the past, we’ve reported on tracking for the film to be skewing towards the $30 million or so arena. But based on these Thursday numbers, things are looking a bit more optimistic than that already-solid opening.

TheWrap reports that the movie is on track to take in $40 million, and that as of right now, projections have it set at $35 to $40 million. This is when compared to other similar films like A Star is Born and Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, which had $3.2 million and $3.4 million Thursday showings, respectively, and $42.9 million and $35 million weekend openings, respectively. Clearly, Bohemian Rhapsody is in good company when it comes to the box office.

Bohemian Rhapsody had a $52 million production budget, and with that in mind, this is a solid opening, but the ever-important word of mouth will be especially important going forward to ensure it breaks that $100 million worldwide mark in order to be somewhere in the neighborhood of profitable. Sitting at 59% on Rotten Tomatoes, critics aren’t doing it a lot of favors, but if the review from our own Fox Troilo is any indication, this is more of a crowd-pleaser than critic-pleaser.

If you’re okay with seeing a rose-colored history of Queen that puts the band up on a pedestal and celebrates their discography, then this may be the one for you.
