Bond Co-Writer On The Character’s Relevance In The Age Of Feminism

James Bond has been known for a lot of things, but his respect of women really isn’t one of them. And it’s not even really him as a character, but the franchise as a whole that doesn’t have a great history of respect. Of course, that’s changed somewhat in more recent years with Daniel Craig’s portrayal of 007, and the more character-driven approach to the series, but there still is a tendency not to give the Bond girls a whole lot to do.

In today’s age of female empowerment, one has to wonder whether or not the character of series has as much relevance as it once did. One of the film’s writers, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who was brought into Bond 25 to add in some humor and dialogue polish, spoke to that very idea.

“There’s been a lot of talk about whether or not [the Bond franchise] is relevant now because of who he is and the way he treats women. I think that’s bollocks. I think he’s absolutely relevant now. It has just got to grow. It has just got to evolve, and the important thing is that the film treats the women properly. He doesn’t have to. He needs to be true to this character.”

I think that last part is important. She opens up the idea that just because a character doesn’t respect women doesn’t necessarily mean a film doesn’t respect them, and it’s all about the writers making that distinction. Hiring Waller-Bridge as a writer on the project in the first place is a step in the right direction, as it’s been decades since a female has been involved in the writing process for one of these movies.

When all said and done, she points to one important goal.

“I just want to make sure that when they get those pages through, that Lashana, Léa and Ana open them and go, ‘I can’t wait to do that.’ As an actress, I very rarely had that feeling early in my career. That brings me much pleasure, knowing that I’m giving that to an actress.”

Fair enough.
