The Borderlands movie cast Jack Black and Jamie Lee Curtis this week. Who might they be playing? Two very well-liked characters from the source material. Borderlands titles itself after the irreverent video game of the same name. Borderlands cast Black and Curtis after previously announcing actors Kevin Hart and Cate Blanchett with Eli Roth directing.
A Guide for the Vault Hunters
Borderlands Patricia Tannis is portrayed by Curtis as revealed first by Collider. Tannis is an archeologist who features heavily throughout the game and its sequels. Curtis is an excellent fit for the upcoming role. Roth was excited because he noted Curtis could specifically bring “humor, warmth, and brilliance to the role.” This casting is exciting since Curtis somewhat favors Tannis’ look. However, portraying a character is more than just appearance. We know Curtis is highly capable of elevating this character based on her seasoned acting skills. In the Borderlands game, Tannis is the one who starts the other characters on their main adventure and continues guiding them throughout.
Hello Minion
If you are a fan of the game, you may have just read that in Claptrap’s voice. According to Variety, Black is Borderlands CL4P-TP, better known as Claptrap. Black is bringing Claptrap’s voice to life. If you were to ask a fan of Borderlands about what makes the game memorable, Claptrap would rank relatively high on most lists. Claptrap is an irreverent robot who brings a healthy dose of comedy. Nathan Kahane, Lionsgate president, stated having Black as Claptrap was “one of the biggest no-brainer casting decisions we’ve ever made.”

The only issue so far with the movie is who they tapped to write it. Craig Mazin’s stuff has been hit and miss. Mazin wrote The Hangover II and III and also gave us Scary Movie 3 and 4, Identity Thief, and The Huntsman: Winter’s War. Movies based on video games do not have the best track record. Could Borderlands could be an exception? By adding Curtis and Black, Borderlands is shaping up to be an interesting attempt at nailing the perfect video game movie. Roth, along with the actors currently attached, should bring something unique to the table.
What do you think of this casting? Is Borderlands shaping up to be a movie you are looking forward to seeing?
