Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was an interesting film that evolved greatly over time. First pitched as a film set decades prior to the events in Harry Potter, it was emphasized that its connections to the original material would be nebulous at best. Sure you may get a reference here and there, but by and large, it would stand wholly on its own. However, at some point, author and screenwriter J.K. Rowling seemed to get a bug in her ear to tie things even closer together.

If you saw Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, you know that it relied heavily on the connections to Harry Potter. No, there was no Harry Potter, obviously, but we saw the likes of Grindelwald, and references to the underground war he waged against muggles. If it wasn’t clear by this point, it seemed as though the connections would become stronger as these political clashes take root and become center stage in the plot.

This would mean that Dumbledore’s appearance would be an inevitability. But who would play him? We’ve all had our guesses as to who it could be. I was personally in favor of Ewan McGregor, but we’re getting the next best thing. According to an announcement from Warner Bros, the man who will take on the beard is none other than Jude Law himself.

Chief content officer Toby Emmerich had the following to say about Law joining the franchise:

“As fans ourselves, we are thrilled to have Jude Law joining the Fantastic Beasts cast, playing a character so universally adored. Jude has been a member of the Warner Bros. family for years and we’re excited to embark on this new adventure with him.”

Director David Yates added:

“Jude Law is a phenomenally talented actor whose work I have long admired, and I’m looking forward to finally having the opportunity to work with him.  I know he will brilliantly capture all the unexpected facets of Albus Dumbledore as J.K. Rowling reveals this very different time in his life.”

It’ll take a bit of mental jury rigging in my head, but when all said and done, I can see this being a solid fit. The main thing I’ll have to accept is that his voice will be no where near as deep as Michael Gambon’s, and I wonder if Jude Law will work to bring his voice closer to that, or if he’ll keep to his standard voice. Filming for Fantastic Beasts 2 begins this summer.

Fantastic Beasts 2 hits theaters on November 16, 2018.
