Bumblebee Sequel In Development At Paramount

It seems like it’s been a long time coming that the Transformers franchise be given a bullet in the back of the head. While the first film was fun enough to watch, it really faced consistent diminishing quality in the years that followed. So bad was the whole thing that Bumblebee — the first actually good film in the franchise — has really been shafted in terms of its box office haul.

As of this writing, the film has broken $412 million worldwide. But is it enough for them to make a sequel? According to Deadline it is. The outlet states that there is a sequel in development, though it will likely come after a new animated movie and standard Transformers movie.

“We had many objectives (including) to bring a new set of families into the series,” Bumblebee producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura told the outlet. “And that succeeded; in the after markets that will continue to succeed in a big way. Part of our obligation was to bring people back who had left the franchise or never experienced it which worked well… We are finding our way. Our intention was we wanted to please the core fans but also bring a new audience.”

Personally, I think this is great news. I’ve long lamented this franchise, but with Bumblebee, we had something so different from what we had before, it felt unfair that it was facing an uphill battle from fans. But what do you think? Are you happy to see this film get a sequel, and what do you think the right way forward for the franchise will be?
