Captain Marvel Confirmed For Avengers 4

Avengers 4 filming is currently underway, and over the next several months we’re going to hear a lot of speculation, rumors, and flat-out misinformation. The next two Avengers movies are expected to significantly change the MCU as we know it, completing the arcs of legacy heroes while introducing and furthering the arcs of new heroes, such as Dr. Strange and Black Panther. Part of me wants to know everything, and part of me wants to know nothing. Sigh.

Many Marvel fans were hopeful that Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel character would appear in Avengers: Infinity War, but that rumor was recently squashed — a fact made more painful given that Captain Marvel almost appeared in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015). Fans seemed resigned to accept that our first view of Larson in-costume would have to wait until her solo film on March 8, 2019.

Fortunately for Captain Marvel fans, today we learned some cool news, as Brie Larson arrived on-set in Atlanta, along with fellow military officer, Chris Evans. According to Screen Rant, Captain Marvel is officially a “GO” for Avengers 4. The bad news, however, is that Avengers 4 releases on May 3, 2019. So, it turns out that our first look at Captain Marvel will still occur in her solo film… the upside is, if you liked her in that movie, you’ll see her again a little less than 60 days later!

The other interesting bit here, it’s pretty obvious that Captain Marvel hasn’t started filming yet. We know that these superhero films typically shoot for three months (depending on script size), and then endure a full year of post-production. Consequently, we should probably expect Captain Marvel to start filming right after the 2017 Christmas/New Years holidays.

The other question raised by Larson’s set arrival, will the Skrulls appear in Avengers 4? I bring this up because Captain Marvel is set in the 90s against the shape-shifting Skrulls, who — similar to Hydra — have a nasty habit of not popping-back-up. Recall that Captain America initially faced Hydra in WWII, but they managed to crawl back into the periphery of history for another few decades, only to re-appear in Ant-Man, Agent Carter, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

In Marvel comics, the Skrull are just as annoying and pesky as Hydra. Given the cosmic nature of the next two Avengers films, it’s reasonable to expect a collision between the Kree-based Captain Marvel and the Kree-hating Thanos — who allegedly has Skrull blood in his family tree (at least according to Marvel’s Earth-X alt-universe). It seems likely that the Captain Marvel movie will introduce us to the Skrull, who will become the Hydra of Phase 4, if I read my Marvel tea leaves correctly.
