Carnival Row: Showrunner On His Influences In Creating The Fantasy World (LRM Exclusive)

This Friday Amazon Prime Video will finally drop Carnival Row their Amazon Original fantasy drama series from Amazon Studios and Legendary Television that stars Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne. In this world, classic mythical creatures and humans have been forced to live among each other because of war, which brings all kinds of problems to the city of the Burgue.

Carnival Row does a great job at setting up a Victorian fantasy world along with exotic lands where these faeries and other mythical creatures once lived. LRMOnline had the opportunity to talk with showrunner for the series, Travis Beacham, about how working in his college library influenced the series.

“In film school I was working in a library and work-study and shelving books and when you shelve book you end up going to parts of the library that you normally wouldn’t go to. So I was reading stuff about Jack the Ripper and stuff about Celtic mythology and old photography books of black and white pictures of Paris and that kind of thing. At the same time we were watching The Third Men in film school and all these sort of classic movies. It’s weird it sort of all swirled together to build this world.”

Getting lost per se in a library and exploring different themes, subjects, etc. seems like it would be a great idea to build a new world that can pull from all over. The series does a great job at introducing us to the Burgue and their creature area, known as Carnival Row, giving the characters and plot a fantastic backdrop for a great series.
