comScore today announced the official worldwide weekend box office estimates for the weekend of June 18, 2017, as compiled by the company’s theatrical measurement services.
This weekend saw the release of a few movies in the form of the Pixar flick Cars 3, the Tupac biopic All Eyez on Me, not to mention, the shark movie 47 Meters Down, and the comedy film Rough Night. The past weekend brought a bit of a mixed bag.
As expected Cars 3 did okay, taking in $53 million in its opening weekend. It was enough to firmly land it in first place, but it was nothing to get excited about. It had the least successful opening of any Cars film to date, and as it stands, it has one of the lower grossing openings of Pixar films as a whole. That being said, it isn’t a bad opening, and is certainly enough to keep the brand alive, ensuring that Disney still makes its money elsewhere, be it in merchandise or at theme parks.
In second place is Wonder Woman, still holding strong. Impressively, it only dropping 30 percent in its third weekend, taking in much more this weekend than The Mummy did in its opening weekend. As of right now, the film has taken in $575 million worldwide, and if it keeps this up, we wouldn’t be surprised if it neared or even broke $800 million when all said and done.
In third place is the Tupac Shakur biopic All Eyez on Me. The critics may have been less than kind to this film, but it still seemed to do okay for itself, taking in $27.1 million. Given its $45 million budget, it’s still quite a ways from making its money back, but you never know with a film like this if it’ll have a life after the box office.
We normally don’t discuss fourth placers, but it is worth noting that The Mummy dropped over 55 percent in its second weekend. While the percentage drop isn’t awful, it isn’t great considering how poorly it did in its first weekend (domestically). It only took in around $13.9 million in its second weekend. It currently sits at around $295 million worldwide. Given its supposed $190 million budget and extra $100 million in marketing, it seems to be approaching the breaking even point (after you take into account the theater’s cut). All in all, it sounds like this film could be approaching profitable soon enough, albeit still aways from the runaway hit Universal wanted.
