Chris Hemsworth Hasn’t Forgiven Fans For Attacking Ghostbusters Reboot, Almost Quit Film

If you were online around the time when the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot was announced, you’ll know there was a good amount of vitriol being spewed regarding the film. This vitriol began the day that movie was announced (before a single line was put to paper) and continued on to this day. Basically, a lot of hardcore Ghostbusters fans did not like the idea of a female-driven Ghostbusters movie.

Of course, the movie has come and gone since then, and the fans ultimately won. We will not be getting another Ghostbusters movie following these characters from the Paul Feig-directed reboot, and that includes the dimwitted secretary Kevin, played by Chris Hemsworth. As it turns out, according to a piece from Variety, Hemsworth hasn’t forgiven fans for attacking the movie.

“That whole period I was like, ‘What ownership do you guys have over those characters?’” Hemsworth told the outlet. “Oh, you watched the film, therefore you should have a say over where it goes? I thought it was very unfortunate and kind of disappointing.”

Ironically enough, while he defends the movie to this day, it was the movie he was most anxious about…so much so that he nearly quit.

“The night before I was shooting, I almost pulled out,” he said. “Three or four weeks prior, Paul said to me, ‘I’m going to write up the character. Don’t worry.’ And then I got the script and nothing had changed.”

In a meeting with Feig, he was assured that the character would have stuff to do — and that a lot of it would be worked out through improvisation.

“I was really scared walking onto that set,” Hemsworth said. “I had no real plan, so I was just feeding off of them, and I just felt ridiculous. So I used that.”

I know what some of you are thinking. “He should have quit that dumpster fire,” right? While I can understand criticisms against the movie (I thought it was an entertaining, though somewhat blah movie that got much more flack than it deserved), without it we may never have gotten the Thor we got in Thor: Ragnarok.

It was through some of the skills learned on Ghostbusters that helped sharpen Hemsworth’s comedic voice. So, in the grand scheme of things, I think it’s a net positive.
