Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth Walk Away From Star Trek 4 Talks

The final frontier may not have its Captain Kirk any more. Oh, and his father may remain dead too. Talks between Paramount Pictures and the actors, Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth, have ended with both parties walking away, THR report. This means that Star Trek 4, which was said to involve time travel and Kirk’s father, may be very different than originally planned.

For those of you that may have missed the first Star Trek, a new timeline was created when a rogue Romulan named Nero traveled back in time to destroy the planet Vulcan. The first victims he came across were on the USS Kelvin, including Hemsworth as George Kirk. The future Captain James T. Kirk, portrayed by Pine, escaped with his mother.

It may come as no surprise that money is the issue with the parties involved. Hemsworth has gone on to play Thor in the multi-billion dollar Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Pine had a starring role in the successful Wonder Woman movie from DC. Pine is returning as Steve Trevor in next years Wonder Woman 84. Paramount Pictures is wanting to keep the budget lower for this outing given the disappointing box office returns for Star Trek Beyond. The actors both claim that an existing deal with Paramount exists and that the studio is failing to hold their end of the bargain.

It should be noted that other actors are close to closing deals to appear in the fourth installment. These include John Cho, Simon Pegg, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, and Karl Urban.

So what does this mean for the future of them film? It’s said that the project is a top priority for the studio and will not be delayed. There are several options to look at. They could keep the story and recast the Kirks. They could scrap that story and kill off James T. Kirk, forcing another officer to sit in the captain’s chair of the Enterprise to guide the crew through some adventure. Or the two sides can come back to the talks and hammer out a deal. I personally hope they can come to an agreement, at least for Pine. I have seen enough time travel in this universe between Star Trek IV, First Contact, Generations, and Star Trek. I love the rebooted timeline though. I think all three movies have their high points. J.J. Abrams did a great job bringing this world to a modern audience. What do you think will happen?
