Chris Pratt’s Cowboy Ninja Viking Pulled From Universal Slate For Good Reason

Universal’s upcoming tentpole film starring Chris Pratt has been pulled from their slate, Variety reports. According to the outlet, the studio pulled the film from its June 28, 2019 release date, which it’s held onto for the past 12 months or so. In this particular case, I’d say it was for a good reason.

The outlet states that it was pulled because the studio is seeking to delay the film rather than rush it out to production in order to hit its release. One comparison that’s being made is 2017’s The Mummy starring Tom Cruise, which was rushed to meet a deadline and ultimately fell flat in the theaters. In order to make sure that doesn’t happen, they’re working to make as good a movie as possible.

When last we heard this past February, they’d been working hard on that script, even hiring Thor: Ragnarok screenwriter Eric Pearson to take a pass at it. Clearly, it wasn’t enough, and though the studio and Pratt were testing actors in Berlin in hopes of beginning production, it’s likely for the best that they pump the brakes and re-assess before too many resources are thrown at it.

Cowboy Ninja Viking is based on the graphic novel fo the same name from writer A.J. Lieberman and illustrator Riley Rossmo, and it’s since had more than a handful of writers take a pass at it. Better great and late than on time and awful, right?
