Colin Farrell In Talks To Play Penguin In Next Batman Movie

Things are starting to move along a little quicker now with Matt Reeves’ upcoming Batman reboot. First on the cast list was The Dark Knight himself, now Robert Pattinson aka Patman. Since then we have seen Jeffrey Wright cast as Gordon, Paul Dano as Riddler, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, along with rumors that Matthew McConaughey is going to be playing Harvey Dent. Then yesterday we heard officially that Andy Serkis (Black Panther) has signed on to play Bruce Wayne’s ever-supportive butler Alfred Pennyworth, check that out in the related section below.

One character we know they have been trying to cast is that of Penguin, otherwise known as Oswald Cobblepot, and yesterday some news appeared of who DC is circling for the role. THR revealed that Colin Farrell (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) is in talks to play the Penguin in Matt Reeves’ upcoming movie. Whilst that does not mean the actor has signed on, I actually really hope he does. This cast list is coming along nicely as far as I am concerned and after never really considering him, I actually think Farrell would be a great Penguin.

From what we can gather Reeves’ Batman movie will follow a similar trajectory to classic comic book story “The Long Halloween”. It is rumored that Batman will spend the movie using his detective skills to hunt down a serial killer, whilst having to go through an array of his most famous villains on the road to catching the real killer. This is certainly an interesting approach, and admittedly not one that has been done in any Batman movies yet. I guess Batman had to use some detective skills in The Dark Knight, but to be fair, that’s unusual for Batman in the movies.

If we do use “The Long Halloween” as inspiration here (rumor only remember), then we can sort of work out what might be going on with all these villains. The comic sees Batman team with Harvey Dent and Jim Gordon to find a killer who kills their victims on holidays. However, it is not Calendar Man, he is currently locked up in Arkham Asylum, though he claims to know who the killer is and won’t tell Batman. Meanwhile, Batman gets caught up in a gang war between the Maroni and Falcone crime families, who in turn get themselves caught up with various iconic Batman villains. I won’t say too much more here, but the end result is connected to how Harvey Dent becomes Two-Face.

If this is going to be based on “The Long Halloween”, it might not be the same story, with the same resolution, and instead just use this story as a framework for something else entirely. We have heard that Paul Dano’s Riddler is the main villain of the piece, and I wouldn’t say that was the case with the comic book. Either way, one would assume that Penguin is not the main villain of the movie and therefore it won’t be a massive part for Farrell to take on. What is far more interesting to me, is the way Reeves seems to be setting up a universe where all these characters are already out there, meaning that the next movie (if this one is successful), could feature any one of these already introduced bad guys as the main villain. It’s really one of the driving reasons for Batman’s popularity, no matter how bad things get, he will never kill villains, and so they always end up back on the streets at some point despite Batman’s best efforts.

With this cast, even without Farrell, I think this is shaping up to be an exciting movie, and since Batman remains my favorite ever comic book character, I am probably there opening weekend even though it hasn’t started filming yet.

What do you think of the cast for this Batman movie so far, are you hoping Farrell signs on officially as Penguin? Stop lurking in the shadows and leave a comment in the bat cave below.
