Thanks to his efforts as a director, producer, and co-writer for films like The Dark Knight and Man of Steel, Christopher Nolan has become something of a geek messiah. Zack Snyder has credited him with creating the blueprint for DC’s upcoming Cinematic Universe, and fans think he’s made the most important films in the superhero genre by bringing a sense of gravitas and depth to them. That’s what makes this new rumor so intriguing.

For years, Hollywood has had an on-again/off-again relationship with adapting the classic manga and anime property Akira for the big screen. Filmmakers and actors have come and gone, andthe last development was that Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way was going to try its hand at producing an Akira movie, with Marco J. Ramirez (Sons of Anarchy) on scripting duties. Den of Geek is reporting that Christopher Nolan may now be involved.

While some speculate that this could be his top secret directorial project that is due out in July of 2017- smack dab in the middle of summer blockbuster season- others think he may just be coming on as a producer. All that is known, according to the rumor, is that Nolan recently took a meeting with one of the other filmmakers previously attached to the project to discuss the film.

The site has also heard that Warner Bros is now no longer just looking at a single film, but rather a trilogy of Akira films.

What do you think, Akira fans?
