Could There Be A Surprise Big Villain Coming In Avengers 4? Let’s Look At The Evidence

We still know so little about what is going to go down in Avengers 4, in fact we don’t even have a title for the movie yet. We have heard a ton of speculation about various titles from Avengers: Endgame to the latest contender being Avengers: Annihilation.

The rumor about Avengers: Annihilation seems to have gathered a bit of steam over the past week or so from when it was first rumored by MCU Cosmic‘s Jeremy Conrad, yet still no one seems completely convinced it is accurate. One of the issue many fans had with his proposed title was that it felt meaningless, what does Annihilation actually mean? Most comic fans know that Annihilation was the title of a huge comic book event story, but that story had absolutely nothing to do with Thanos or Infinity Stones, so does it really make sense as a title for Avengers 4?

Today’s speculation around the web, (I won’t even call it rumor) is about whether Annihilus, the big bad of the actual Annihilation comic book could actually show up as a new big bad of Avengers 4. Let’s look at the flimsy evidence we have for this and thus why I won’t even call this a rumor yet.

Firstly we have a cryptic post on Twitter from MCU Cosmic‘s Jeremy Conrad, who first broke the Annihilation rumor as I said above. Check it out below

Now some fans have started adding up details and coming up with Annihilus appearing in Avengers 4. CBM reported that one keen-eyed fan has spotted some details on some promotional merchandise which leaked yesterday featuring a look at Thor and Rocket decked out in brand new costumes. Apparently, the back of these respectively reads as follows.

“The Asgardian Thor wields the mighty Stormbreaker in his battle against new foes.”

“Rocket teams up with a new crew to guard the galaxy from an even greater threat.”

Now, this leaked merchandise does appear to be the real deal, so we have to assume several things, one that there will be new foes and two, that there is an even greater threat. Let’s be clear though that this in no way validates this Annihilus speculation, but it does perhaps provide some ammunition.

Could this happen? Honestly, I am extremely doubtful that Marvel would suddenly decide to throw in Annihilus as a new threat with no prior build up at the end of Avengers 4. What would Thanos role be, to team up with the Avengers and defeat Annihilus? That doesn’t feel like a good idea to me, as one friend of mine said: “I don’t want to see Thanos smash a group of enemies with Hulk and then they turn round and fist bump each other.”

Well, I don’t want to see that either, Avengers 4 should be about the Avengers and Thanos. I would be as excited as hell to see them tease Annihilus as a villain to replace Thanos as the big threat going forward, but not so much as a proper villain for Avengers 4.

There is also the small matter of Annihilus being currently owned by Fox, and whilst those assets are all going to be Disney’s in the near future, it hasn’t happened yet. Avengers 4 must have been planned for a long, long time, probably even before the deal for Fox was initially accepted. So unless Fox had made a deal with Marvel prior to all this that we just don’t know about (as Conrad suggests), then I just have trouble seeing it. But hey, who knows and don’t let me stop the speculation running rife, I am just trying to add in a calmer and more logical side to the hype.

What do you think of all this, convinced, he will show up, convinced he won’t? Feel free to speculate to your heart’s content in our comments section below and let me know if I missed any crucial evidence.
