Crunchyroll And VRV Are Making Big Changes in 2019 — Original Anime Coming To Streaming Platform

As AT&T fully takes control over video subscriptions sites Crunchyroll and VRV it appears that the two sites are in for an upgrade. The newly created Ellation Studios headed by, the president of Women in Animation, Margaret Dean has sights on making more original intellectual properties for their streaming services. These changes will start to begin with High Guardian Spice, a magical girl series, in 2019 in a 2D animated series on Crunchyroll. Despite not stating how many series Ellation Studios is looking to develop, Dean mentioned that she is looking towards all different genres of anime to give a wide spectrum of variety.

Crunchyroll has been around since 2006 and has developed a presence in the anime community both in America and Japan developing over 50 original series for the service. However, Ellation seems to be looking for a larger presence establishing studios in both Burbank and Tokyo with a staff of 75. Dean has made statements that she wants to progress anime here in America and supporting creators who can help Ellation’s brand. Additionally, the studio looks to diverge from many traditional confines of what is being made today by going back to 2D animation for High Guardian Spice.

Here’s what Dean had to say regarding the creators at the studio:

“So many of them have these stories that they’re dying to tell but have never been able to figure out who would let them and support them. That’s what we want to do.”

One concern I have about Ellation Studios is Margaret Dean’s experience with anime. While talented within the western branch of animation Dean has little experience with anime. The closest she comes is being a Production Manager for the original version of Teen Titans. Dean surrounds herself with a roster full of talented artists but keep an eye out for Crunchyroll going from anime to western cartoons.
