You can’t say Greg Berlanti isn’t one busy dude. In addition to shepherding the DC Comics series Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl, he also recently sold another comic book show, Black Lightning, to the folks over at Fox. But the guy didn’t stop there.
Now, Variety is reporting that Berlanti Production has sold a pilot called Deception to ABC.
According to the outlet, the pilot, written and executive produced by Chris Fedak follows a former superstar magician named Cameron Black, whose career is ruined by a scandal. After hitting rock bottom, he realizes there is only one place that can use his specific skill set of illusion and deception: the FBI. He then opens up a business as an illusionist consultant, “helping the government solve crimes that defy explanation and trap criminals and spies by using deception.â€
I’m two minds on this one. On one hand, this is a show that sounds so painfully TV (in a negative way) that I can hardly take it. It has that specific brand of cheese and procedural that smells an awful lot more like old-school network TV than anything truly creative. That being said, I’m also a big fan of the show Psych, which — despite its similarly bad “TV” premise — managed to survive off its smart sense of humor, pop culture homages, and clever twists on tropes.
We’ve pretty much gotten to the point where these TV shows can’t just be retreads of similar concepts and expect to last longer than a few seasons.
