Danai Gurira Is Leaving The Walking Dead

Earlier, it was Rick. Then, it was Maggie. Now… Michonne?

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Danai Gurira, whose role on The Walking Dead brought her fame before scoring a spot in Black Panther, will be leaving the popular AMC series. According to sources with knowledge of the new deal, Gurira will finish out season 9 and appear in a handful of episodes in season 10 before exiting the series. It is likely that she will segue into the three TWD film spin-0ffs opposite Andrew Lincoln, who plays her character’s love interest, Rick Grimes. Lincoln exited the series in the first half of season 9.

AMC programming president David Madden spoke with The Hollywood Reporter back in November regarding Gurira’s future with the series.

“She has been very vocal about saying that she loves the show. We love Danai; we love that character. Right now, she’s got a lot of opportunities and she needs to weigh what she feels is best for her. But we certainly would want her on the show as long as she wants to be on it… We really want her to stay. She is an incredibly valuable character and I’m really hoping she stays. Obviously, the lesson of Andy [Lincoln] is that the show can survive anybody’s departure if need be but that’s not our goal. The goal is to have Danai continue on whatever basis she can make work, given the other things that she has going on in her life.”

Aside from her well-established acting talent in television and film, the Master in Fine Arts from NYU has written and starred in multiple theatre productions dating back to 2009. Additionally, Gurira is a focal point in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, playing Okoye in the Oscar-nominated Black PantherAvengers: Infinity War and bound to appear in Avengers: Endgame as well as the highly-likely Black Panther sequel. Gurira’s new deal with AMC will definitely make it easier for the actress to pursue other ventures while having the option to return and portray the popular character that opened so many doors for her career.
