Dark Phoenix Receives A Disappointing CinemaScore

I promise you we’re not beating up on this movie. None of us at LRM Online want to see movies do poorly. When a movie is bad it’s not entertaining, and who wants to be disappointed at the theaters? Also, when a movie underperforms it hurts everyone involved in making the film. The writers will have trouble getting new writing gigs, the director’s profile takes a hit, and the actors get associated with a movie whose problems may not be their fault. However, the news is what it is and in this case, it’s bad.

Dark Phoenix had a franchise-low opening weekend with only $33 million at the domestic box office and it has now received a franchise low score from CinemaScore, a B-. The highest scoring films in the franchise were Days of Future Past and X2: X-Men United which both received an A while the previous lowest score was a B+ from X-Men Origins: Wolverine. For what it’s worth Logan scored an A-. When you think about grades in the frame of school a B doesn’t seem too bad, but in terms of movies a B- is basically the equivalent of “I don’t care about it” from the audience.

When the audience doesn’t care about a movie, they don’t recommend it to others and that’s one-way box office bombs are made. The other is when the audience hates the film of course. This type of reaction to the film could lead to many people waiting for the film to hit home video instead of seeing it in the theater. Who wants to spend money for a babysitter to go see a film that no one thinks is really worth seeing?

The movie could still do well enough overseas to be considered profitable, but does any of that matter when we know this franchise will be completely rebooted to fit into the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
