As most of you have probably heard by now, James Gunn retroactively Roseanne’d himself and was fired as director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Unlike Roseanne, Gunn’s tweets were from about 10 years ago, and there were several of them. Now actor Dave Bautista, who plays Drax the Destroyer in the Guardians franchise has spoke out about the situation, here’s what he had to say.
I will have more to say but for right now all I will say is this..@JamesGunn is one of the most loving, caring, good natured people I have ever met. He’s gentle and kind and cares deeply for people and animals. He’s made mistakes. We all have. Im NOT ok with what’s happening to him

To my knowledge, Bautista is the first member of the Guardians cast to speak out about the situation surrounding Gunn, but surely in time the others will also comment. As frequent LRM commenter Kratos mentioned on Nick Doll’s original LRM article, celebrities likely have teams of people scrambling to remove anything even mildly offensive from their social media accounts.
I am all for free speech, but the Constitution only protects your right to say what you want, it doesn’t protect a person from the consequences of their speech. I believe private companies have the right to protect and manage their brand the way they see fit, as we have seen a couple of times over the last few months, with Roseanne, and now James Gunn.
Gunn’s tweets were, pretty freakin weird, he claims they were off-color jokes, and maybe they were, but to me they read more like outlandish statements than jokes.
