Dave Bautista WASN’T Planning On Leaving Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3

It all seems like it happened years and years ago. We were living in a world where the next Guardians of the Galaxy movie was NOT going to be helmed by one James Gunn, who not only directed the first two, but really made the obscure characters household names almost overnight. This was a guy who clearly threw his whole creative being into the films he produced, and Disney was ready to cast him aside at the first sign of controversy.

Gunn had plenty of support during his time as the “previous director” of the franchise, but there was no one as loud and angry as Dave Bautista. At one point, Bautista even made a statement implying that he hoped Disney would relieve him from his contract, and this hinted as his willingness to jump ship along with Gunn. But how true was it?

“No, it wasn’t that I was going to jump ship and do Suicide Squad,” Bautista told ET Online. “I was more at the point where I was like, ‘Fire me. I don’t care. You’re going to hear what I have to say.’ And this is the way I feel and I think you made a bad call and I don’t care if you fire me because I feel this way. This is me being honest and me sticking up for my friend who was wronged.’ So that was it. It wasn’t about me — I’m not threatening to go do Suicide Squad, but I was just saying, ‘If things aren’t here, I’m just going to leave. I don’t want to be a part of this.'”

Okay, so based on those comments, it does seem like Bautista was pretty much just telling Disney he wouldn’t be quite about Gunn’s firing….or is he? His original comments to ShortList were as follows way back in August of last year.

“Where I’m at right now is that if [Marvel] don’t use that script, then I’m going to ask them to release me from my contract, cut me out or recast me,” Bautista said back in 2018. “I’d be doing James a disservice if I didn’t.”

So, while the actor does seem to be backpedaling a bit (I’m sure he FEELS right now that that’s how he felt back then), it seems clear to me what he really meant last year when he spoke to the outlet.
