DC Has Big Plans For Black Manta

As we learned a while back from the film’s director, James Wan, that Aquaman will also be an origin story for the character of Black Manta. It seems DC has plans for the character that expand beyond the Aquaman’s world and affect the DC universe as a while. Producer Peter Safran spoke with CinemaBlend last year and pretty much confirmed the villain would survive the film.

“We certainly have every intention that Manta plays a very large role in the DC universe. He has to. He’s just too great. And we give him his origin story in this movie. We do show how Manta, that we see in the comic books, became that character. And we’re so fortunate to have this guy, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, to play him. I don’t know if you guys saw The Get Down on Netflix, this guy Yahya is just extraordinary, and he came in and he auditioned and we met with him and it was just a slam dunk.”

I do like how the filmmakers chose to make Black Manta sort of an up and coming villain, giving him an origin story, while foreshadowing a feeling of, “watch out for this guy.” I thought the trailer looked entertaining, while the visuals still look very Snyderish, it really didn’t seem to have the same overall tone. not as much fun as Shazam! is shaping up to be, but I can see why Wan says Aquaman is a fantasy story as much as a superhero film.
