Deadpool 2 Director Doesn’t Think The Character Necessarily Has To Stay R-Rated

Disney and Marvel Studios certainly have an embarrassment of riches situation going on with their Marvel characters. Earlier this year, with the acquisition of Fox, they acquired tons of Marvel characters in the process, including the amazing Deadpool, whose previous two movies have garnered over $1.5 billion combined. But where does the character go from here?

Deadpool has been a hard character to place. Unlike the countless other characters, he doesn’t fall so perfectly within the PG-13 category. He’s foul-mouthed, sexual, and his movies have a lot of over-the-top gore, to boot. But what does this mean for his place in the MCU? Will he continue to exist outside of it…or will Marvel Studios tone him down?

Deadpool 2 director David Leitch apparently believes that both Deadpool as a character and the MCU as a universe are more flexible than we give it credit for, as he said to Yahoo Movies UK.

“It’s rated R so that’s not necessarily the [MCU] brand but he doesn’t necessarily need to be R and [Disney] don’t necessarily need to only make PG-13 movies. I think we’ll find a happy ground.”

So, according to Leitch, we don’t need to keep Deadpool in an R-rated box, and Disney doesn’t need to keep making their properties PG-13…so it can go either way.

Honestly, I’m not sure I buy the latter part, but I can see them making Deadpool a bit more family-friendly in nature. If nothing else, they can still keep him isolated over at Fox, and from the way things have been pitched in the past, that’s where I’d put my money.
