Today Deadpool was announced as a nominee for the PGA award for best picture. What is the PGA one might ask? Well, I am here to tell you that the PGA is the Producers Guild of America, and they hold major clout when it comes to who gets nominated for Oscars. So much in fact, that if a movie hits the PGA Best Picture award nomination, they are often on the Oscar ballot as well. If Deadpool could somehow win this, then The Merc With A Mouth could have even more glory than just an Oscar nomination, as this is the award that the creators of the movies look at for confirmation that they created gold.

Here are the nominations for the prestigious PGA Best Picture award:

  • Arrival
  • Deadpool
  • Fences
  • Hacksaw Ridge
  • Hell or High Water
  • Hidden Figures
  • La La Land
  • Lion
  • Manchester by the Sea
  • Moonlight

There are other reasons that Deadpool could get nominated as well.

First, this is a down year for Oscar contenders. The best I can tell, the main three movies in contention are Arrival, Manchester By The Sea, and La La Land. Even though La La Land broke a Golden Globe record in wins, most still do not see the Golden Globes as a credible win. It’s not like Deadpool is going up against The Godfather, 12 Years A Slave, Unforgiven, or Schindler’s List — the movie will instead face off to the mighty power of… Lion.

In addition, thanks to fan outrage for The Dark Knight not being nominated a few years ago, the Best Picture has expanded to 10 films from 5. Surely, Deadpool can be squeezed in there, and lets be honest, Deadpool was wonderful. The movie actually has aspects that critics look for; character development, a cohesive and enthralling story, and a great ending. We will know for sure on Jan 13th when the Oscar nominees are announced, and until then I am crossing my fingers for Ryan Reynolds after he gave the fans exactly what they wanted.

Does Deadpool have a shot here? What do you think?
