Detective Pikachu Sequel Already In The Works At Legendary

If you’d asked me whether or not Pokémon: Detective Pikachu would be any good before we saw the trailer hit late last year, I’m not sure I would have been confident at its box office viability. After all, this is a franchise that has banked for years on the whole “gotta catch ’em all” tagline, and they opted to go with a film that didn’t really utilize what made the franchise big in the first place. It was a risky move, and as soon as the trailer hit, it seemed clear that all concerns were for naught.

Not only did the Pokémon themselves look pretty fun in the film, but the relationship between Pikachu and the lead human character was pretty darn cute to behold. But, more than anything, what really set this whole thing home for me was the overall fan reactions. They were completely ecstatic on virtually every level, pretty much driving home that their approach was actually a good idea.

Now, it seems like the studio is getting ready to capitalize on this should the box office numbers actually reflect what seems to be the case here. According to a new report from THR, Legendary has signed writer Oren Uziel to pen the script for the sequel. This comes in advance of the first film’s May 10’s release. This doesn’t guarantee a sequel, but does show the amount of confidence the studio has in the movie’s potential profitability.

Uziel’s other work includes the adaptation of Sonic the Hedgehog as well as 22 Jump Street and The Cloverfield Paradox…so it’s kind of a mixed bag in terms of quality, though I’m admittedly just put off by Sonic’s design. The fact that they’re actually pulling someone who worked on another video game movie franchise could actually speak volumes about the quality of the Sonic the Hedgehog script…but who knows if execs even had access to the Paramount screenplay.
