Detective Pikachu To Take In $50M To $55M In Opening Weekend, Behind Endgame

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu looks ready to do some solid business at the box office this coming weekend. Not amazing business, but solid business. According to a new report from Deadline, the film is set to hit North America with $50 million to $55 million in its opening weekend. That doesn’t sound too fantastic, but when taking in the foreign box office, we’re talking a $160 million total haul for its first weekend.

Now, given the movie’s $150 million, that doesn’t sound absolutely amazing, admittedly. I think Warner Bros. and Legendary would have loved to make more, but Detective Pikachu isn’t exactly a standard film for them, as it is much more family-friendly than even Shazam! was earlier this year. They’re likely hoping that between the edgier Ryan Reynolds and good word-of-mouth that this property will do well for the Nintendo property.

Coming out on top this weekend will be Avengers: Endgame, dominating its third weekend with $75 million to $85 million, which will all contribute to the film potentially (eventually) dominating the juggernaut that is Avatar. It’s unfortunate for Detective Pikachu, but who’s to say we can’t have two success stories in a weekend?

Honestly, though, given how well Detective Pikachu is doing with critics, I wouldn’t be surprised if the movie broke $68 million domestically. Don’t ask why, but for some reason, I have that really specific number in mind. Can it be a sign from the future? Probably. Does it mean I’m full of s**t? Probably. But I guess we don’t have much longer to wait.

What do you think of these box office predictions? Do you think Detective Pikachu will only take in $55 million in its opening weekend in North America? Let us know down below!
