Detective Pikachu: VFX Producer Tested Casting Danny DeVito

I’m not sure if you know this, but back when the Nintendo 3DS game Detective Pikachu hit game shelves in Japan, the idea of a grizzled Pikachu solving crimes kind of took hold on audiences in the States. We wouldn’t be getting our version of the game for years, but given how that character turned out in Japanese, it led many to leap to a logical conclusion: that character should be played by Danny DeVito because it would be hilarious.

There were plenty of fan videos showing off what that could sound like were Danny DeVito to actually take on the role. You can check that out down below.

Okay, so it wasn’t exactly the best put together video (and that one is a fairly recent one), but you get the idea. It’s a nice juxtaposition between his cutesy nature and his voice. So when we found out there was going to be a Detective Pikachu movie, it seemed like a good opportunity to fulfill fan wishes…only that didn’t happen. Instead, we got Ryan Reynolds — a solid choice, but no Danny DeVito.

But was it completely off the table? Speaking with GameInformer, producer Cale Boyter revealed that they’d actually thought of it.

“We definitely thought about it and how it might inform the spirit of it. Danny is incredible by the way. I am a huge fan of Danny DeVito.

“I can’t give away too much, but in terms of where the story goes and how it evolves, we had to sort of look at everything, including what fans weren’t seeing yet to make the decision. But that spirit of Danny DeVito, I promise you, is still inside of Pikachu. By the way, Ryan would probably love that.”

Apparently, that wasn’t all. VFX producer Greg Baxter revealed he and his VFX team took lines from DeVito’s previous works and animated Pikachu with them as a test.

“It was really very funny, so I couldn’t speak to all the reasons why it wasn’t Danny DeVito cast,” Baxter says. “I love Danny and some point maybe after the movie comes about, we can share those early tests. It’s absolutely hilarious.”

I’m looking forward to seeing that spirit come to life!
