Director Bong Joon Ho Open to More Remakes of His Work Like Snowpiercer [Exclusive]

Call it remakes. Call it Americanization. Call it reboots.

Director Bong Joon Ho is one of the most celebrated Asian directors in the business. His Parasite Korean film is set for theaters nationwide and it has a perfect score at Rotten Tomatoes with critics at 100 percent with 128 reviews. That’s unheard of for any movie.

An early indication Parasite will get award nomination nods, in particular with Academy Awards. It already won Palme d’Or unanimously at the Cannes Film Festival and the Audience Award at Fantastic Fest.

Parasite is a dark comedy about an unemployed family taking interest in a more wealthier family as they con their way into their lives.

His other masterpieces spawned over recent years with Netflix’s Okja, Snowpiercer and The Host. All featuring colorful worlds with empathic storytelling and social commentary.

LRM Online caught up with director Bong Joon Ho last week on the red carpet for a special presentation of Parasite in Los Angeles.

We’ve exclusively asked Bong Joon Ho about remaking his features for American audiences.

He said through a translator, “If someone pulls off a remake, I would be very happy [that they] could newly expand my original idea. I would be glad to see it. There’s a TV show of Snowpiercer coming out soon. Season one is already completed. It will be aired next year. I’m looking forward to seeing it.”

Snowpiercer television show will be debuting on TNT in 2020. The film version was structured for American and international audiences that starred Chris Evans, Jamie Bell and Tilda Swinton. The class warfare story will be on the small screen with Jennifer Connelly, Daveed Diggs, Mickey Sumner and Susan Park.

As for Parasite, if this film sweeps the trophies during awards season, then do expect someone to re-create an American version of the film. It’s best to view the original work and this movie will not disappoint.

Parasite will be playing nationwide in theaters this Friday.
