Director James Gunn In High Demand After Disney Firing

It seems that once the negotiations for director James Gunn’s ousting from Disney are complete, he won’t have a difficult time finding work. Several top producers and executives are reportedly approaching Gunn with their projects, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

One senior executive at a studio has stated “I’d work with him in a heartbeat” while another has gone on to say “I’ve been advised that we can’t bring anything to him until the Disney matter is 100 percent resolved.” Both execs asked to remain anonymous due to the current state of the contract. Gunn is not permitted to entertain other offers while his negotiation to exit Disney is ongoing. Gunn was fired on July 20th after offensive tweets from a decade ago were brought to light. He was currently preparing to go into production on the latest installment of Guardians Of The Galaxy, a series in which he had written and directed the previous two films.

Since Gunn did not have a “pay or play” contract, once negotiations are complete, it is possible that Gunn could walk away from the deal with between $7 to $10 million, if not more. Moreover, he would be able to take on a project immediately. Complicating things is the fact that Gunn completed the script for Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 and sources state Disney plans to use his script.

Studios who have less of a “family-friendly” appearance than Disney have no qualms picking Gunn up for their projects. One exec stated “Most people feel his comments were coming out of his brand of comedy [at the time he made them]. Having an inappropriate sense of humor shouldn’t be a crime.” In this writer’s opinion, Gunn’s comments were made seven to ten years ago and he hasn’t made comments of that nature since. It is possible that this man has made a complete 180 from the man he was then. Hell, this writer isn’t the same man he was five years ago, let alone ten. It’s not as if he’s continually made these comments since then and made one of its nature within the year. However, that’s simply an opinion and not one Disney seems to share.

Also, in this writer’s opinion, Warner Bros. execs better be formulating a plan of attack once the negotiations are finalized, because their DC Extended Universe could definitely use the James Gunn magic.
