Director James Wan Talks About The Real Love Story Of Aquaman

With the release of the official Aquaman trailer this past weekend at San Diego Comic-Con, fans are finally able to get a feel for what kind of movie Aquaman is going to be when it hits theaters on December 21. Some parts of the world will already have seen the movie, as it releases up to a week earlier in many places, and there is certainly enough for me in the trailer to seriously consider seeing it opening week.

Director of Aquaman James Wan has been speaking about the movie a little more now the trailer has escaped. Wan spoke with  Fandango recently and got onto discussing the love story of the movie. Many expect that Mera and Arthur Curry will copy their comic book inspirations and eventually end up as a couple. However, Wan thinks the real love story of Aquaman is that between Tom Curry (Temuera Morrison) and Queen Atlanna (Nicole Kidman), here is what Wan told the outlet.

“So I know I needed to start the movie off with the love story between his mom and dad. I know a lot of fans are excited for the love story between Arthur and Mera, but for me, the movie is as much, if not more, the love story between Tom Curry and Queen Atlanna. How Queen Atlanna, from a completely different kingdom, far more civilized, so to speak, than we are, could fall in love with a simple human being on the surface. A surface dweller. It really shows the power of love. How love is blind to any of that, and how through their love, Arthur is born. I thought that is a very important emotional backbone to have because that emotional backbone basically drives Arthur’s entire emotional arc through the film. Anyways, because of that, that’s one of the things that we really want to get across in the trailer. Just the humanity of it.”

The story of Tom Curry and Queen Atlanna is one we have seen in a variety of comic book and animated formats. It’ll be interesting to see how much focus this has in the movie and whether the chemistry works between Kidman and Morrison. If anything this fully fledged origin story makes me once again question the decision to make Justice League before Aquaman and a Flash movie. Let’s hope DC can get back on track and just make one good movie at a time for now.

Are you hyped about Aquaman? The trailer seems to have been very divisive amongst fans so far, but then 2018 is the year of divisiveness so far. Tell us what you think in the usual place below.
