Disney-Fox Merger Expected To Close…Next Week!

disney fox merger

It’s almost here. Very soon, Disney and most of Fox will now be under the same creative umbrella, creating the whole new era in the entertainment industry, for better or for worse (probably a little bit of both). But it’s a deal that’s been in the works for seemingly as long as we can remember (okay, maybe just a bit over a year). Now, we can start counting down the days until the two become one.

According to a new report from Variety, Disney is expecting to officially acquire most of 21st Century Fox at 12:02 a.m. ET on March 20, 2019 for roughly $71.3 billion. So that’s early Wednesday of next week. This means that on March 19, 2019, Fox Corporation will be a new thing and will consist of all the assets that Disney did NOT buy (surprisingly enough, they opted not to change their identity altogether…I’m sure that won’t be confusing at any point). Also, at this point, Disney will assume roughly $13.8 billion in debt from 21st Century Fox.

In the immortal words of Scar, “this is the dawn of a new era where lion and hyena come together in a great and glorious future.” This future will see the X-Men and Fantastic Four back under the Marvel Studios roof. While it hasn’t been confirmed, it’s only a matter of time until those characters make their way into the MCU proper. Of course, these aren’t the only ways in which the industry will be affected — it’s almost impossible to calculate how far-reaching those effects will be between the film and TV projects between both studios and their many subsidiaries, but it’ll be one we’ll be keeping an eye on.
