Disney Goes For Oscar Nominations In All Categories For Black Panther

After the decision to cancel the popular film category at this year’s Oscars, we all expected Disney were going to make a big push to get Black Panther some nominations for the prestige awards ceremony. Various officials at Disney/Marvel had already said they were not interesting in this new popular film category for Black Panther and the cancellation of this has prompted them to begin making their case.

We here at LRM have debated the Oscars a few times recently and the majority of our team (including myself) were against the idea of a popular film category right from the start. However, I think we all feel that the big summer movies should at least be considered for Oscar nominations other than the technical side, when they deserve it, of course. Here is my question though, does Black Panther deserve to be nominated for all these awards or not? In my humble opinion, no!

For me Black Panther simply isn’t any more impressive than any other MCU movie, in fact, Black Panther is not even one of my favorite Marvel movies. I was far more impressed by recently by both Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Infinity War. Black Panther was a good movie, don’t get me wrong, and I generally like all Marvel’s movies. However, for me if I were to pick some comic book films that were worthy of the biggest Oscar prizes over the years I’d be looking at a very small list. The Dark Knight, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Batman Begins are in my opinion the only ones I think were worthy. I like Infinity War more than The Winter Soldier, but I think, overall, The Winter Soldier was a better standalone movie than Infinity War, which was a definite fan-pleasing movie, and as such, had so many geek-out moments that bring me back again and again.

However, it does not really matter what I think, I am not on the Academy and will be up to others to decide on the awards fate of Black Panther. The cultural significance of this movie and how it resonated with the black community, may give it the extra push the Academy needs. Is that how these awards should be decided though? This is my issue with the Oscars, it all feels like a big game of politics mixed with back-slapping and campaigning for Academy votes. I have no interest in the Oscars whether Black Panther wins, or some other movie I have never even considered watching.

Do you think Black Panther deserves any of the awards Disney are attempting to get the film nominated for? What superhero movies do you believe should have been nominated over the years? Perhaps LRM should do our own version of the Oscar awards this year as a counterpoint when the real thing comes around? Share your thoughts with us in the usual place below.
