If you’re one of the many fans out there who were hoping to see James Gunn reinstated as director of the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, you may want to re-adjust your expectations. Variety is reporting that him helming that movie isn’t looking likely.

This is according to “multiple people familiar with the studio’s current thinking.” The reason? Both studios seem to think that the jokes Gunn made about rape and pedophilia are unacceptable and aren’t in line with the image Disney is trying to convey — so pretty much what was already said in their official statement.

This is in spite of the growing support James Gunn has had from the main cast of his movies, which includes big names like Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, and Bradley Cooper. Apparently, the studio thinks that, despite their backing Gunn, they’ll join the sequel no matter what since they are under contract, so the studio has little to worry about there.

There was recent speculation that because Disney had remained silent on finding a director for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, they were silently considering rehiring Gunn, but this report states that Disney “feels no pressure to immediately find a new director,” and is willing to wait until the right one comes along. They are under no real timetable. Despite James Gunn’s claims that the film would hit in mid-2020 and reports that it would begin production this coming January, no official statement was made by Disney.

Don’t take this report as final, though, as this is the same outlet who just yesterday told us that their sources were saying rehiring Gunn was likely. I’m not saying they’re not trustworthy, but that Disney’s own thoughts seem to be waffling back and forth, so there’s no telling how this will land.
