Disney’s Streaming Service Has A New Name

For the past few months or so, we’ve been calling Disney’s upcoming streaming service Disney Play. And why not? It made sense, and it was the name they gave to us, so it made sense that we’d use it, right? Well, as I’ve learned many a time in this line of work, never assume that any title is going to stick around (hell, Edge of Tomorrow proved that a movie’s title could change even after its release), and Disney Play is no different.

In a recent company earnings call (via CNBC), Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed an unexpected name change to the streaming service. Instead of Disney Play, it would now be called Disney+. And you know what? That’s not a bad title. It has a nice techy look to it, and it’s easy to remember. Good on you, Disney, but you’re wreaking havoc on our tag consistency here on the site — though I suppose you don’t really care much, do you? As we’ve learned in the recent months, in addition to the traditional theatrical Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars-branded content this service will have a good number of original shows and films. On the Marvel front, we know we’ll be getting a Loki and Scarlet Witch limited series from Marvel Studios (NOT Marvel Television), and on the Star Wars front, we’re getting a series called The Mandalorian and another recently-announced show that follows Rogue One‘s Cassian Andor.

Of course, that won’t be all. They’ll also have exclusive projects like the Christmas film Noel, starring Anna Kendrick, and an animated show based on Pixar’s Monsters Inc. Needless to say, the House of Mouse is taking this streaming business very seriously.
