Veronica Roth had built up millions of loyal fans from her Divergent series books.

Fans fell in love with Tris Prior as she navigates the struggles of a futuristic dystopian world that pits five factions of young adults against each other. The society was divided into the following five factions of Candor (honesty), Abnegation (selflessness), Dauntless (bravery), Amity (peacefulness) and Erudite (intelligence).

The three-book series included Divergent, Insurgent, and Allegiant. It spawned three book-to-film adaptations of the same name that starred Shailene Woodley but never concluded the film series with Ascendant.

Nonetheless, Roth wrote a prequel collection of short stories with Four: A Divergent Collection. She also wrote the Shards and Ashes anthology and Carve the Mark duology. Her latest publication was with Chosen Ones, a magical apocalyptic novel.

In the continuing Facebook series called Letters To….., Veronica Roth surprised two superfans in the discussion of their fan letters to the author.

One of the fans wondered how Roth handled mental illness in her life and career since she publicly addresses the issue.

“There is this feeling that if you treat your mental illness that you won’t be able to create as beautiful as rich art. And I think that’s a total lie, especially it has been for me,” she told the fan. “So for me, it gets in the way. So I have always thought it’s important to prioritize mental health because then you can do a better job at your job. In that sense, it has been at odds with my writing. But I also think that through the writing, I can explore some of the issues that I discovered years later that was what I was working through while I was writing. Tris literally goes through basically exposure therapy in Divergent. Then I did exposure therapy two years after that.”

Then Roth continued to address where her inspiration comes from for her books.

“For me, inspiration has always come from the interesting things in the world. One of my favorite qualities in a person is curiosity. I try and cultivate in myself as much as possible,” she explained. “Obviously, stories are always important to me. So those are an inspiration. What’s also inspiring is science, and history, and just anything in the world around us.”
