Doctor Sleep Trailer: The Shining’s Story Continues In New Sequel

Decades ago, Stephen King wrote the classic novel The Shining, and some time after, auteur Stanley Kubrick made his film adaptation. This adaptation wasn’t too well received by King himself, but it has since made a huge impact on pop culture. Just a few years back, King wrote a sequel to The Shining called Doctor Sleep, and when it was picked up to get adapted, fans couldn’t help but wonder if it would take place following the events of the novel or the film, as the two were very different.

A new trailer has dropped for the Doctor Sleep film, starring Ewan McGregor, and while it does seem to be based on the story in the novel, it is NOT shying away from the Kubrick film references. From the hotel carpeting to the image of the blood spilling from the elevator and musical score cues, it’s clear they’re connecting this to Kubrick’s classic.

It’s a ballsy move, for sure. Check out the trailer below!

Below is the official synopsis for Doctor Sleep:

Doctor Sleep continues the story of Danny Torrance, 40 years after his terrifying stay at the Overlook Hotel in The Shining. Ewan McGregor, Rebecca Ferguson and newcomer Kyliegh Curran star in the supernatural thriller, directed by Mike Flanagan, from his own screenplay based upon the novel by Stephen King.

“Still irrevocably scarred by the trauma he endured as a child at the Overlook, Dan Torrance has fought to find some semblance of peace. But that peace is shattered when he encounters Abra, a courageous teenager with her own powerful extrasensory gift, known as the “shine.” Instinctively recognizing that Dan shares her power, Abra has sought him out, desperate for his help against the merciless Rose the Hat and her followers, The True Knot, who feed off the shine of innocents in their quest for immortality.

“Forming an unlikely alliance, Dan and Abra engage in a brutal life-or-death battle with Rose. Abra’s innocence and fearless embrace of her shine compel Dan to call upon his own powers as never before—at once facing his fears and reawakening the ghosts of the past.”
