Donald Glover, Ryan Gosling Reportedly Lead Shortlist For Willy Wonka Film

It’s been a few solid months since we first reported that there was a new Willy Wonka film in the works from Paddington director Paul King. This new film would be titled Willy Wonka, and it’s because of that that it was assumed the film would be a wholly different take on the source material. In the time since its announcement, rumors only grew that this would actually be an origin story for the chocolatier.

While they still seem to have quite a lot of development to go, according to a new report from Collider, it sounds like they have a shortlist of actors who Warner Bros. want to play the enigmatic Willy Wonka. This list consists of Donald Glover, Ryan Gosling, and Ezra Miller.

Gosling has a rich history with Warner Bros. (the studio behind this project), and as such, it makes sense why they may go to him. He’s also gone a long way to cement himself in the industry as a fantastic actor who chooses his movies very carefully — so his signing on could be indicative of a quality script. That being said, it’s hard to imagine someone like Gosling as a truly eccentric and antisocial being…they’d have to go a long way to strip the charm from the guy.

Miller is a fitting choice. Not only is he a real rising star, but he’s played a good number of quirky, oddball characters. More recently, his take on Barry Allen brought a real goofiness that, while divisive among fans, shows that he can play up the eccentricity with ease. Additionally, between Fantastic Beasts and Justice League, it’s clear he has a strong relationship with Warner Bros.

The interesting one is Donald Glover, who recently graced the silver screen as Lando Calrissian. In addition to starring in a Star Wars film, he has a hit TV show, Atlanta, the upcoming Lion King, and a music career that just got a kick in the pants from his single, “This is America.” Glover has officially hit mainstream recognition, and while it doesn’t seem like he has an extensive history with Warner Bros., this could be the start of one.
